"The Vampire Diaries" finale countdown brings with it the decreasing number of days fans will be able to watch Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert. Now that the prospect of the cure is easily accessible for her, viewers find it hard to imagine that she will decide not to take it.
There is a multitude of ways on how the show may end, as pointed out by Hollywood Life. Since the cure is right there for Elena, she can easily take it and return to her human form. If she chooses to retain her vampire form, then she would either be compelled to leave the town or be killed off in the series.
Since there are only five episodes left before the show ends, executive producer Julie Plec revealed a few things to Entertainment Weekly about what fans could expect. "The season ends with a flash forward," she said. "The show is not cut yet. So, by the time I am done with it, it might not, but, currently, it does."
"Midway through the season, I was, like, 'Oh, God, how is this going to happen?" Michael Malarkey shared to Us Weekly. "Maybe she will change her mind! So, it could be that she has decided to take the cure? Or that she is not going to take it."
Despite the "flash forward" tip and Malarkey's statements, nothing much has been confirmed about the show's future. He further added to the mystery, hinting that Season 6 will end on "a really great cliff hanger."
Furthermore, fans of the franchise have been questioning the purpose of Matt, played by Zach Roerig, in the story. According to some speculators, Elena will not meet her demise and she will most likely be taking the return-to-human cure.
With hints of a "flash forward" scene, it is assumed that she might be with Matt Donovan in the future - thereby answering the questions with regard his purpose in the relatively twisted Mystic Falls story. After all, life in the eerie town is no longer safe and secure for Matt since he is the only human left.
In this special scene, MTV predicted that the townspeople of Mystic Falls might be shown coping sans Elena Gilbert. It is worth noting that the last time the hit The CW vampire-centered show skipped several months' worth of episodes was when Damon and Bonnie "died." However, fans are hopeful that Dobrev's character will not be meeting the same fate.
