'Furious 8' Release Date & Cast Confirmed? Vin Diesel Announces 2017 Film

Auto lovers will rejoice as the eighth installment of "The Fast & Furious" has been confirmed.

Franchise star Vin Diesel has just confirmed the exciting news on Thursday. LA Times reporter Amy Kaufman tweeted that the 47-year-old actor revealed, "We are making Furious 8."

In addition to announcing the project, a release date was also revealed. The "Furious 8" film is set to hit the silver screen on April 14, 2017.

"It means a lot to me to get your blessing," quoted Variety of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" star who made the announcement during Universal's ComicCon panel held Thursday in Las Vegas. Speaking at Caesars Palace, the next film was confirmed on the same stage where two years earlier it was revealed that "Furious 7" would continue following the death of actor Paul Walker.

"We were giddy and excited," added Diesel. "You all gave me so much confidence. There was so much love."

Other details regarding the film plot and casting have yet to be announced but rumors have been circulating regarding what audiences can expect from the upcoming movie.

Diesel has been very vocal about his desire to create another film. Earlier comments to MTV News indicated that a film was being discussed.

"The fact that the world embraced it and allowed it to be Paul's legacy, it is just a beautiful thing," quoted MTV News of the action star. "Paul used to say that 'Fast & Furious 8' was guaranteed, and, in some ways, when your brother guarantees something, you have to make sure it comes to pass."

Realty Today published that per various online sources, it's possible that Walker's brother Cody, who acted as a body double in order to complete production of "Furious 7," may return to the franchise as a new character, probably related to Paul's character Brian O'Conner.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has also commented that a possible setting for the newly announced movie may be in New York City.

"Furious 7" has dominated the global box office having achieved nearly $1.2 billion since its release earlier this month. Forbes has reported that "Furious 7" has passed $300 million domestically and is estimated to have generated over $800 million worldwide.

In addition to the "Furious 8" announcement, Universal also revealed that the "Fifty Shades of Grey" sequels will arrive in theaters February 2017 and February 2018.

Franchise actors Diesel, Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson have yet to confirmed their return for "Furious 8."
