‘Death Note’ Live Action Film Plot & Cast: Horror Filmmaker Adam Wingard to Direct!

A "Death Note" live-action film will be hitting theaters soon under Warner Bros. production. However, the studio has had only very little to show for it for several years now.

Fans are now delighted after finding out that this famous manga, or Japanese anime, already has a director tied to it in the person of horror filmmaker Adam Wingard. According to Hollywood Reporter, the "You're Next" director signed on for "Death Note" but will only start on production after shooting one of his upcoming projects this summer, "The Woods."

"Death Note" is based from the famous Japanese comic book series written by Tsunami Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. Its storyline is focused on Light Yagami, a teenager who comes across a notebook that permits him to kill off anyone by writing their name on it. Everything then turns into a vigilante form of justice as Light opts to use the notebook to get rid of evil-doers.

With Wingard's direction, fans are expecting the upcoming "Death Note" live-action film to have some horror-oriented story arcs especially when the God of Death, Ryuk, makes an appearance. Screen Rant is convinced that Wingard is the best choice for a director for the Japan-originated film. As seen in the other movies he directed, he has a tendency to handle different tonal elements of the narrative that can assist him in giving the storyline a stronger horror flavor.

There were three director choices for "Death Note." Before it was confirmed that Wingard was going to be the director, Shane Black and Gus Van Sant were also rumored to be interested in the film.

Black opted to forego his association with "Death Note" and moved on to 2016's detective film, "The Nice Guys." His inclination towards crime story arcs and bleak humor would have made him and the project a suitable match. Van Sant, meanwhile, was reportedly initially attracted to the film because of its twisted aspects.

Right after Wingard films "The Woods," he will reportedly start filming for "Death Note." "The Woods" is the latest horror film collaboration between Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett. They have previously established themselves as effective horror filmmakers in "The Guest," "You're Next," "The ABCs of Death," and "V/H/S."

The Wingard-Barrett horror team-up was also rumored to remake the Korean horror movie, "I Saw the Devil" but no new information regarding this particular project has surfaced of late.
