Taking a cue from the "Ghostbusters" franchise, Sony Pictures is reportedly working on an all-female cast spin-off for the popular comedy series "21 Jump Street."
It was detailed in a new report by The Hollywood Reporter that "Broad City" writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs have been hired to pen the spinoff. The studio is said to be looking to expand its franchise base and is looking for "ways to create its own cinematic universes."
"21 Jump Street" is based on the 80's Fox television show starring Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise who played undercover cops.
Variety revealed that the studio has declined to comment on the comedy franchise. While there is no official word on the all-female spinoff, a source has already linked a name to the project.
Screen Crush reports that "Fifty Shades of Grey" lead actress Dakota Johnson, who appeared in "21 Jump Street" as Fugazy, could be the new film's lead star. It's believed that the character could provide a link between the original series and the spinoff.
The third installment of the Jump Street franchise has begun work on the next title with Rodney Rothman selected to work on the script. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who oversaw the earlier two installments, will return as producers and overseeing the script writing for the film which will once again star Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
The original Jump Street and its sequel have grossed more than $530 million worldwide.

In addition, VC Post has also revealed that based on the massive Sony hack, Tatum and Hill will be involved in a "Men in Black" crossover.
It is believed that similar to what DC and Marvel have done with regards to the superhero franchises, in the future, we could see a tie in of the three franchises within the Sony universe.
The new "Ghostbusters" is set to be released on July 22, 2016 with production set to begin in June.
