‘Cube’ Reboot Greenlit from Lionsgate; Plot to Focus on New ‘Digital’ Race?

"Cube," the hit cult sci-fi film that first hit theaters in 1997, will be rebuilt by Lionsgate through the production of Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts of "Prometheus" and the direction of Saman Kesh of "Controller." A synopsis of the reboot's plot has been leaked, and it looks like the Lionsgate's take on the sci-fi thriller will involve seven strangers.

Just like its predecessor films, the people who wake up cramped inside a cube-shaped enclosure do not know each other. The official title of the movie is reportedly "Cubed," and it will be a sci-fi flick with a survival thriller tone. It will reportedly feature artificial intelligence, humanity, and the birth of a new "digital" race, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It seems that reboot films have become part of today's movie industry. It may have even become a trend among studios and Screen Rant stated that moviegoers have somehow accepted them as a fact of life. The report reiterated that naming movies in the 80's and 90's that have not been turned into remakes or reboots today may turn out to be easier.

The original "Cube" in 1997 was directed by Vincenzo Natali, who now moved on to bigger projects such as Splice and one of today's most watched TV shows, "Hannibal."

The storyline of "Cube" was actually quite simple. However, it was such as ingenious concept that it has been ripped off multiple times. As previously mentioned, a group of seven people, who are extremely different and do not know anything about each other, wake up at around the same time inside rooms - each of which has been shaped into a cube.

To make everything even more exciting, each seemingly vacant room is actually filled with various booby traps. This is where the thriller part steps in. They all work hard to find each other and to escape - assuming that they can avoid the deadly traps that the Cube's makers set up for them.

Now that Lionsgate has officially given the "Go" signal for the "Cube" reboot, fans of the sci-fi thriller are hopeful that the studio can redeem the franchise. The film's sequels, "Cube 2: Hypercube" and "Cube Zero" turned out to be flops. Lionsgate's knack of capitalizing on old movies might be the push that the sci-fi horror needs.

"Cubed" is reportedly already in the works but no official release date has been confirmed.
