'Sherlock' Season 4 Cast, Update & Release Date: Here's Everything You Need To Know For The Next Episodes!

The last time Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson were seen on the TV screen was around a year ago and since then, news about the BBC hit series, "Sherlock," has been scarce. However, fans need not worry anymore as the show is coming up with a Christmas episode in 2015 to tide them over until the next season.

The modern adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's popular detective stories in a three-episode per season format airs on BBC every two years, so it is not a wonder why fans have been clamoring to see more of Sherlock and Watson.

Fans would soon get that wish as it has been confirmed that BBC is coming out with a Christmas special for the series this 2015. According to Movie Pilot, the special episode would be a "stand-alone adventure" that would see the characters of the series back to the Victorian Era in England in the year 1895.

The creators of the series seemed to have the Victorian Era episode in mind as early as Season 2. An episode in the said season hinted of that era when it came up on the screen as the number of viewers of Watson's blog.

The year 1895 proved to be a highlight in the story of Holmes as it was the year his stories became so popular, revealed series co-creator Mark Grattis. Aside from that, it was also the same year that writer Arthur Conan Doyle, who gave life to Holmes and Watson, killed him in one of his stories. Of course, the author brought him to life in his later stories.

After the Christmas special, the next time fans would see the detective duo in action is in the fourth season which is due to come out sometime in 2016.

Co-creator Steven Moffat revealed that an event in Season 3 would affect the upcoming episodes in the next season.

"You can sort of see that in the way series 3 went. It's great that he's back and John's got a wife and Sherlock likes her and isn't it adorable, and then it all goes to hell. Remember where we left them," hinted Moffat.

Venture Capital Post noted that the possibility of "hell" in the next episode is the death of Watson's wife. The original story of Conan Doyle told this and some fans speculated that it would be the same way in the next episodes.

Even Freeman himself acknowledged where the character of his bride would end up. "While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So Watson gets married and then Mary dies - s at some point presumably she'll die," said the actor.

The 90-minute Christmas special already wrapped up production though no exact date of its premier has been announced.
