Ever since "Avatar" came out on the big screen, fans of the James Cameron-directed science fiction film have been waiting eagerly for the sequel. However, it seems that they might have to wait a little bit longer. While the next installment was confirmed, it has been delayed to 2017 as Cameron works on the scripts simultaneously.
After the movie became a huge hit, reports of sequels started to circulate and it was then revealed that the Academy Award winning director planned for three more additional films in the franchise.
The script is reportedly what's taking Cameron's time right now, revealed Christian Post.
Music composer James Horner, who also worked with the director in Avatar, said that the 60-year-old filmmaker has been focused on completing the scripts for the next three films.
"Right now, Jim has four sequels, script wise. And he's trying to make it into three," said Horner. "And that is where, I think, his effort is going right now. To keep it to three sequels. Because he's got so much going on how do you keep it from expanding into a fifth movie, total. And he'll get that sorted out," added the composer.
Due to the scripts, the 'Titanic' director decided to delay the highly anticipated sequel to 2017 instead of the initial 2016 release date.
Cameron is intent on ensuring that the screenplay is flawless and fluid. He wants to complete all the three films' scripts before starting production with the sequel, thus the deferment to 2017.
With this new release date, Master Herald reported that "Avatar 3" would come in December 2018 while the fourth installment would get released in 2019.
When asked about the timeline, the famous director expressed no concern on the further delay, reported IGN.
"There's nothing I need to say as an artist about the state of the world and human affairs that I can't do through the lens of the Avatar universe," said Cameron.
He added, "We've had a couple of years to think through the story arc of the next three films, and every day that goes by, I believe in the stories I'm telling more and more. We're not coming out of the block fast to capitalize on the last film."
While the plot of the upcoming sequel is unclear, Cinema Blend reported of rumors that the events would take place 35 years after the first film and focus on the moons of Polyphemus and the Pandora rainforests.
