Mindy Kaling's adorable New York-based series has been cancelled by fox but it may not be the end for the comedy.
After three seasons together, Entertainment Weekly has reported that following low ratings, Fox has decided to end its partnership with the show. However, the series - which has generated a cult following - may find a future over at Hulu. The publication reports that following the cancellation of the romantic comedy by Fox, Universal Television, the show's producer has been in serious talks with Hulu for possible additional seasons.
Vulture reports that it's most likely the show will be picked up by the streaming firm for a commitment of two more seasons.
Mindy Kaling's Teasing Response
With the news of the cancellation circulating over the internet, the 35-year-old actress has taken to social media to offer fans a cryptic yet upbeat message.
"Hey guys, I'm in Montana, is anything happening in LA? #themindyproject," wrote the showrunner over Instagram in a video that shows a scenic view and ends with Kaling winking at the camera.
"The Mindy Project" began in September 2012 to approximately 4.6 million viewers but with three seasons in the bag, the finale of the last season only took in 2.1 million viewers, reported The Los Angeles Times.
The actress' response gives loyal fans some hope as we know that there's a chance the sitcom could continue in a different site.
Rumors of a possible cancellation began earlier and according to the publication, Kaling remained positive even though rumors were already circulating about a possible end.
"Maybe some people thought, 'You should wrap it up just in case,'" quoted LA Times of Kaling during an earlier interview. "But I'm not that type of person who can operate under the assumption of failure. If it's going to lead to more stories or it doesn't, I'll sort of face that when the time comes. I want to see them again. And I don't want to write from the point of view of it ending, if I don't believe this is the end."
