A new exquisite property, Tavern Island, is up for sale for $11 million. The 3.5 acre strip of land located on Long Island Sound, near the affluent neighborhood of Rowayton, Connecticut, is said to be where Marilyn Monroe and other celebrities used to party.
Tavern Island is accessible from the mainland via a boat and is just an hour's drive from New York City. According to a report from elledecor.com, the current price of the property "is not that bad," considering the hefty costs of penthouses in Manhattan nowadays.
The main house on the island exudes a Tudor style and offers six bedrooms. Aside from the main house, there are three other buildings on the island, which includes a two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest cottage, a boathouse with a large gaming room, bedroom and bathroom and a Tea House. The private island mansion offers gorgeous views of the New York City skyline, especially at night. Additionally, there's a pool that's strategically situated in front of the sea.
Dailymail.co.uk reports that the property was first inhabited by English colonial settlers in 1651, and by1950s and 1960s, the home was owned by theater legend and lyricist Billy Rose. Rose is said to have thrown the glitziest and most glamorous parties of the era, which was graced by celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Maureen O'Sullivan and Barbra Streisand.
"The lore is epic for this particular island: It's said to have been inhabited by European settlers in 1651 and occupied by the British during the American Revolution. Lillian Hellman finished her play 'The Little Foxes' on Tavern Island, and Marilyn Monroe is believed to have attended at least one Billy Rose soiree there," a report from Zillow.com states, as reprinted by seattlepi.com.
