Real Estate Listings: Great Gatsby House for Sale for $3.9M

The Long Island home where it was believed Fitzgerald wrote the American novel "The Great Gatsby" has been listed on the market for $3.8 million. The spokesperson for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage declined to identify the owner of the house for sale, according to The Guardian.

The manor is situated in the village of Great Neck Estates, which is just outside of New York City. It was built in 1918 and measures 5,000 square feet. It was reported that Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda lived there from October 1922 until April 1924. During those times, the home was considered to be relatively modest and it was said that the famous author started his novel by writing it in a room located over the garage. Fitzgerald was believed to have written the first parts of "The Great Gatsby" while they were living among the socialites of Long Island's Gold Coast region, according to the Telegraph.

The manor has since been remodeled and some of the features have been changed such as his previous writing room, which is now a bedroom. The Mediterranean-style seven-bedroom home has six bathrooms and several fireplaces. It also features a music room, a gourmet kitchen, a den and a bar located in the basement. It has grand parabolic windows and also a second floor balcony.

As reported by the LA Times, according to some legends, the couple would throw wild parties in the house. It was also said that there was a time when their maid came to their house one morning and found the couple passed out in front of their lawn, unharmed, after driving home from a drinking night in Manhattan.

Fitzgerald and his wife reportedly eventually moved to France where he finished his masterpiece.
