French Open Update: Wawrinka Ousts Federer in Quarterfinals

It's a season of upsets in the French Open 2015 as rank no. 8 Stan Wawrinka defeats world's no. 2 and fellow Swiss Roger Federer for the first time in a Grand Slam and the third time in overall, coming out of the score 6-4 6-3 7-6, Daily UK Mail reports. Looking at the stats, Federer failed to score in breaking Wawrinka's serves as opposed to the latter's that broke his serves 38% of the time, which essentially dictated the outcome of the game. "I tried many things," Federer told CNN. "One of them was trying to put (the ball) up high. Another one was trying to chip it shorter. Another one was trying to hit through the wind. Obviously I was not going to leave the French Open without having tried everything out there. Stan was clutch on the big points and really didn't give me much, so it was a credit to him for playing so well."

Wawrinka was able to defeat Federer twice out of their overall 18 previous match ups both in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo 2014 and 2009. Coincidentally, all of the now three defeats happened in clay surfaces. Federer however won over his countryman in their last three games before this year's French Open. The latest was also in a clay court which was in semifinals of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome of this year. Stan Wawrinka will advance to the semis facing French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Meanwhile Italy's Rafael Nadal and Serbian Novak Djokovic will face each other in the French Open again, this time in the quarterfinals. Instead of competing for the trophy like what happened in the last year's French challenge, they are playing early in the tournament this year. The match up is a result of Nadal's ranking going down to 7th this year which positioned them both in the same cluster. The game however is still excitingly anticipated as "The King of Clay" Nadal battles current world no. 1 Djokovic, the finals or not. Also playing for the quarterfinals is the Scottish Andy Murray versus Spain's David Ferrer wherein the victor will face the winner between Nadal and Djokovic.

In women's singles, Serbian Ana Ivanovic advances to the semifinals after beating Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-2 and will be playing with the Czech Lucie Safarova.
