The "Game of Thrones" show lost one of their visual effects editor, Katherine Chappell, who was mauled to death by a lion in Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday. According to the report by NBC News, Chappell, 29, went to Africa to raise money for various organizations that help protect animals from poachers. She was killed while taking photos from a car.
Scott Simpson, the assistant operations manager at Lion Park located north of Johannesburg, said in the NBC report that the lion approached the passenger side of the car and bit Chappell through the window. There were also witnesses who told the park officials that the windows were down, which was against the park's policy. Simpson added that visitors are constantly reminded with signs to keep their windows up at all times.
After the incident, the lion was moved to a solitary pen. Simpson insisted that the park is perfectly safe if the visitors will always follow the rules. The park was said to have reopened the day after the incident.
Pierre Potgieter, Chappell's driver, also sustained arm injuries from fighting the lion and trying to save Chappell. He told the local media that he also suffered a heart attack during the incident.
According to US Magazine, Chappell was a New York native who studied at Hofstra University on Long Island and just started to live in Vancouver, Canada last 2013 where she was employed at the production company, Scanline. Aside from working as a crew in the TV series" Game of Thrones," she also worked with several films like "Divergent," "Godzilla" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."
