The latest installment of the hair-raising horror movie "Insidious," titled "Insidious: Chapter 3," will hit U.S. theaters tomorrow, with its release date set as June 5. A day before it officially comes out though, some film critics have already come up with reviews and expressed their disappointment in the film for its lack of new material and scare factor.
Scott Foundas, chief film critic of Variety, described the film in his "Insidious 3" review as "a thuddingly dull prequel" to the first two "Insidious" movies. Instead of continuing the story of the first two films, "Insidious 3" takes the audience back to a few years before the events in "Insidious" and "Insidious 2." [Spoilers Alert!]
Reportedly, a new haunted family is featured here, which eventually reaches out to the spirit questor Elise (Lin Shaye), who was featured in the first film. In "Insidious 3," Elise has just turned back from the spirit-hunting world after attracting unwanted spirits in her attempt to reach out to her husband who killed himself. According to reports, the movie plays out with the same story line from the previous films, which is Elise helping out the horror-stricken family, which film critic Michael Ordona from Bradenton Herald described as "more of the same," which is "not good." He also said that the filmmakers clearly "didn't bother coming up with anything new."
With the two previous "Insidious" films' fame for their haunting scenes that won't make you sleep at night or go to the bathroom alone, "Insidious 3" was expected to bring in a lot of scare as well, but the movie reportedly failed in that area. Both Foundas and Ordona claim that "Insidious 3" as a horror flick actually lacked in the scare department, with Ordona even describing watching the movie as a "physically painful experience" because of its boring material. However, both critics noted that the film had a few shining, scary moments, such as the scene that showed a half-formed woman with no face, hands, or feet.
Though the "Insidious 3" reviews so far are not good, Shaye's performance as Elise was reportedly spectacular and may be one of the few good things about the film. Another critic, Alonso Duralde from The Wrap, even said that the movie is "Shaye's show all the way," as she shone in the role that allowed her "to play a full array of tones, funny to vulnerable, despondent to determined."
"Insidious 3" is set for release tomorrow, June 5. It was directed by Leigh Whannell and features Lin Shaye, Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott and more. See "Insidious 3" trailer below.
