'The Muppets' News: Miss Piggy To Be Given Feminist Art Award

Muppet icon, Ms. Piggy, will be receiving a feminist award for her important contributions in uplifting the role of women in media and the arts especially among children, from the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art of the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

In a statement released by Ms. Piggy, she conveyed her excitement to receiving the award but also revealed that she was not at all surprised to be receiving the said award. She also expressed of how she felt great to be distinguished and honoured along fellow legends, role models, and pioneers of female fabulosity.

ABC reports that the awarding ceremonies and presentation included a 20-minute video retrospective of Miss Piggy's career starting with her debut in the all-time most popular puppet show, The Muppets, in 1974 to her latest endeavours. It also included a dialogue with Gloria Steinem, pioneering leader and spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the late 1960s and founder of Women's Media Center.

In a report for Time magazine, Miss Piggy explained that she has always been an ardent feminist and champion of women's rights. Although, she also never denied caring more about her looks, her star billing, and her share of the gross.

Founder of Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Elizabeth Sackler, commented that she has no problem with the views or lifestyle of Miss Piggy and describes the glamorous, outspoken pig as "an embodiment of so many of the traits that feminists aspire to." Sackler also added that Ms. Piggy was an inspiration to many children to be who they are as a person or individual, which perfectly harmonizes with the tenets of feminism.

The Sackler Center First Awards is held every year to honor extraordinary women who are first in their fields. Ms Piggy will be joining the ranks of Marin Alsop, Connie Chung, Johnnetta B. Cole, Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, Sandy Lerner, Lucy R. Lippard, Chief Wilma Mankiller (posthumous), Toni Morrison, and Linda Nochlin, who have received the prestigious award.
