Richard Matt and David Sweat, both convicted killers, make history when they executed an elaborate and sophisticated escape from an upstate New York prison last Saturday, according to CNN.
"These are dangerous people.", New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Matt, 49 and Sweat, 35 were discovered missing from their side-by-side cells Saturday morning during a "standing count" of inmates at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannamora, New York, the state police said. The facility is the largest in the state which has a population of 2689 inmates.
The pair used power tools and decoys to look like they're sleeping, BBC reports. Head counts are being performed every two hours throughout the night. The escapees tricked their guards by arranging things on their bedbunks. "It looked like people were sleeping...with these sweatshirt hoodies on.", the governor said. They were last seen at 10:30 p.m Friday during the standing count, authorities said. Matt and Sweat cut through a steel wall and followed a series of tunnels and pipes until they emerged from a manhole outside the prison walls. The police also added that it is still unknown as to how and where the two got the necessary tools they used in this sophisticated escape. However, Cuomo, who toured the escape route that consists of maze of tunnels and pipes said that, it is possible the escapees' tools came from workers performing maintenance on the 1845 facility.
In a lighter side of this story, as if in commemoration of the first-ever succesful escape from the 170-year history of the facility, the two men left behind a yellow sticky note on a pipe that says, " Have a nice day.".
In accordance with this crisis situation, Gov. Cuomo announced that the state is offering $ 100,000 as a reward for any information of the escapees. "We'll go through the exact details of what they did and how they did it to ensure this never happens again.", he added. As of now, more than 200 officers are searching for these two dangerous people. Roadblocks have also been set-up in the area.
