‘The Martian’ Trailer, Cast & Release Date: Is the Movie Simply ‘Interstellar’ 2? No, Says Andy Weir; Writer Explains Why

"The Martian" movie producers have recently unveiled the film's first official trailer, which has currently gone viral. While majority of the reactions to the trailer are positive, some think that the film is way too similar to the blockbuster and award-winning sci-fi movie "Interstellar," but writer Andy Weir says otherwise.

At first watch, the "The Martian" trailer does point out obvious similarities with "Interstellar": 1) Matt Damon is featured as an astronaut stranded in space; 2) Jessica Chastain looks to be a science geek/expert in the movie, just like in "Interstellar." However, Andy Weir, a self-confessed "lifetime space nerd" and writer of the book, on which the film is based, said that "The Martian" will be more different as it will heavily focus on the science, which is what the trailer actually suggests, with Matt Damon delivering an epic line in one of the scenes: "I'm going to have to science the shit out of this."

Weir actually addressed the comments on the "Interstellar" similarities in a recent tweet, saying: "Why yes, Matt Damon did play a stranded astronaut in Interstellar. Thank you, thousands of people, for pointing that out over and over." He claims though that the big difference between "The Martian" and "Interstellar" is the former's less reliance on science fiction.

In a talk during the Humans to Mars Summit and in the Q&A at the end of his book, as reported by Business Insider, Weir said that he combined imagination and science in the story. He reportedly used his imagination to conjure up images of a manned mission to Mars and came up with all the necessary research, math and physics involved, for solutions to the protagonist's problem in the movie: to survive in Mars until the next crew gets there to save him.

Though the movie is expected to shed light on the mysteries of science for an ordinary moviegoer, "The Martian" also aims to excite viewers with thrilling scenes on space such as dust storms on Mars, rocket fuel accidents and other "science-backed" disasters, some of which can be seen in the trailer.

"The Martian" is based on the award-winning book by Andy Weir. It revolves around Astronaut Mark Watney's (Matt Damon) fight for survival after a fierce storm on Mars and his attempts to reach out to Earth to inform his crew that he's still alive. The release date of the film is set on November 25 in the U.S.
