Tech News: Why Googling Yourself Will Help You and How to Do It Properly

Have you ever tried opening Google and entering your name in the search box? Conceited, egotistic, or self-obsessed others might say, it is now deemed necessary to look your name up once in a while, whether you are applying for a job, an employer is doing a background check, you have a budding romance ahead, or if you are establishing a name for yourself in an industry.

Your reputation, job, and even relationship may rely on the results of your search. You might find someone blogging about you, photos of you posted in various social media sites, or your name being mentioned in random websites.

In case you have not tried looking up your name yet, try it with the help of these snappy tips, as reported in Fox News. If you have, maybe some of these might be helpful.

1. Search for your name in quotes, such as "Lovely Young," instead of just the name. This way, you can see even the mentions of your name. If you have a pretty common name, then you have a long list of results ahead.

2. To further narrow down your search, you can add personal information to your name, such as your city or state, the name of schools you have attended, the companies or organizations you have joined, or possible in endeavors you have participated in. You can also run a search with your number or email address. You would be surprised at the results, as some people have discovered their personal information posted in sites.

3. Afterward, head on to Google's Image Search and check if you have photos publicly posted. You can also run a reverse image search, wherein you can click the camera icon in the search box and paste a link to the image you have, or simply upload it. Google can scour the Internet for matches.

4. After thoroughly looking up your name, try to check usernames you have used in your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media accounts.

5. Lastly, if you are still worried that something might turn up in the next days or months to come, try to sign up to Google Alert in order to receive notifications if your name has a new result.
