Sam Smith Sets New Tour Date After Vocal Cord Surgery

After weeks of keeping silent, Sam Smith finally found his voice again - literally! The English singer and songwriter guested in Radio 1's Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw and he could not contain his excitement over finally being able to speak again, BBC UK reports.

The Stay With Me singer incurred haemorrhages in his vocal cords and first noticed it in New Zealand while having a break from his Australian tour.

"I just went to sing and something wasn't right, something was hurting in my throat. I had vocal haemorrhages on my cords."

"I'd just been singing too hard for too long."

His Australian tour in April was cut short after discovering the situation of his vocal cords and cancelled several more concerts including a Radio 1 Big Weekend appearance in May.

The 34-year-old underwent a successful vocal cord microsurgery in Boston by Dr. Steven Zeitels, the same hands who gave back the voices of Steven Tyler, Lionel Richie, and Adele, allowing them to return to full vocal performance, People reports.

"Sam Smith underwent vocal cord microsurgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels to stop recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage (bleeding). This condition is the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture and prevent vocal performance," Massachusetts General Hospital said in a statement.

During the BBC Radio 1 interview, the BBC's Sound of 2014 awardee opened up about the surgery and how it prohibited him from speaking for 3 weeks and unable to sing for six to eight weeks.

"It was so bad. But I got through and everyone's been so amazing about it, so thank you," he tells the radio show host.

"As you can see, I can speak, again for the first time in three weeks, and it has been horrible sitting in silence and knowing that I should be doing shows has killed me," he shares in a clip posted on his account.

The singer took to Twitter on Tuesday and announced the restart of his tour on July 3 performing a special East Anglian show as part of Forest Live.

"I'm gonna try my absolute best to sing my heart out, every night," he said before asking fans to "please bear with me as always."

The 4-Time Grammy Award winner shares how he cannot wait to be performing live again but in the meantime, he's taking his vocal return slow.

"I've just been like singing in the shower and stuff," he told Radio 1, adding, "I've got two more weeks chill time."
