The Federal Bureau of Investigation has traced back a computer, which is used to hack celebrity photos, in Chicago. According to Yahoo, the computer registered a total of 600 hacked personal data-storage accounts that belong to a majority of female movie stars whose nude photos were published online. The FBI also managed to confiscate extra computers and cellphones from a home in October, but up until now, the authorities are yet to file any charges.
FBI also said that right after the raid, investigators were able to determine the IP address of the computer used to illegally access Apple iCloud accounts of celebrities. The affidavit identifies eight celebrities with their initials only.
However, according to Fox News, the lack of charges on the raided home only showed that it might be a victim too as stated by a cybersecurity expert at Governors State University in University Park, IL. The expert also said that the IP address can be hacked from anywhere in the world. The cyber security warned everyone to be cautious on using iCloud and that passwords should be difficult to crack.
The raid on the house is part of the investigation of how the nude and explicit photos of celebrities, such as Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who incidentally is not in the affidavit, were stolen and were leaked online.
iCloud was instantly put in the hot seat since most of the victims used it for storage for their private photos and videos. Apple was quick to respond that hackers were only able to breach individual accounts and not the entire iCloud security system.
