Real Estate Tip: Are You Aware of these Extra Fees That Could Add to the Cost of your Move?

"Whether you are moving by choice or by necessity, you should evaluate all the costs of relocating because costs vary a lot, even within a metropolitan area," Teresa Luetjen-Keeler, a certified relocation and transition specialist in Fanwood, New Jersey, tells bankrate.com.

Because house moving isn't exhausting enough, there are also extra 'hidden costs' that could cause bumps along the way if you don't do your homework. Accessorial services, like carrying your belongings upstairs, are extra services that are not automatically included in the moving estimate but you probably need to prepare for.

To make sure you don't fall short on your budget, here are extra fees that you may need to look out for according to zillow.com:

Packing and Unpacking

Most movers dread the packing and unpacking process as it is the most time-consuming. More importantly, it is the most crucial of the whole preparations because there is risk of damaging prized possessions during transit.

A moving company would gladly provide packing services including the needed materials like paddings to ensure your things don't get damaged during the transit. They will also be liable for any damage which is a huge plus.

The moving company can also do the unpacking at an additional fee and is being charged on an hourly basis. If you have budget left, they can also collect packing materials and dispose them for you.

Long Carry

More than 50 to 75 feet from the entrance of your new home, the moving company will charge an extra 'long carry fee' to take the shipment inside. The payment will be based on the distance from the moving truck to your residence. One way to avoid this is by reserving a parking space in front of your home in time for the delivery.

Exclusive use of the moving vehicle

A shared moving truck could help you save bucks but may take time to deliver your items with no guaranteed delivery date.

For an extra fee, you can pay for the exclusive use of the truck and make sure your goods arrive on time.

Climbing stairs

If you are moving in a property with no elevators (if there is, make sure you reserve one as you could be charged for elevator waiting time), then you could be charged extra for bringing items up the stairs. You will be charged either per step or per flight of stairs.

Disassembly and reassembly of furniture

Dealing with furniture is tricky because you might ruin a valuable piece from separating detachable parts. When unsure, movers can help you dismantle and reassemble your furniture for an extra cost, of course. Not only does this save you time, it also allows you to begin with the unpacking.

Waiting time and re-delivery

Don't make them wait! Movers can charge you for waiting fee if you don't meet them on the agreed date. You will also shoulder the cost if they would have to place your belongings in storage.
