'Game of Thrones' Season 6 News and Update: HBO's Hit TV Series to Film Some Scenes in Spain

Brace yourselves 'Game of Thrones' fans, as the cast of HBO's massive hit television series will begin filming in late July for its sixth season installment. Looks like things for the upcoming season will not be full of dark wintery scenes as this fantasy drama will be heading to Spain to shoot at different locations, as confirmed by HBO.

Some scenes will be shot in the city of Girona, between the French boarder and Barcelona, and a seaside resort on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, called Peñiscola.

The country also served as the primary location for the series' Dorne Water Gardens, which was shot at The Royal Alcazar Seville.

It seems like the popularity of Game of Thrones did not stop on its fifth season as the production team and the cast were greeted by locals with extreme enthusiasm. It is further reported that the production received a whopping 86,000 applications from people who want to become one of the extras for 'Game of Thrones' Season 6, according to Entertainment Weekly.

What's making fans speculate is that the show's return to Spain will mean that the fifth season's Dorne storyline will be continued to its sixth chapter. It also still remains unclear what fictional places from the books the new locations will represent.

While Belfast is the current location for the series' continent of Westeros, the cast and crew has travelled to shoot in other countries, including Malta, Morocco, Croatia, and Iceland for some of its unforgettable scenes. Furthermore, there's only one other country that HBO confirmed for the 'Game of Thrones' Season 6 filming - Northern Ireland.

The fans can definitely expect to see new faces come the sixth season of 'Game of Thrones.' Based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling books, the production crew has already done the first stages of its casting calls. This included a pirate in his late 40s or 50s, as described by Vanity Fair, a father who was one of the best soldiers of Westeros and his family, as well as a priest and a group of three boys.
