China's Belly Button Challenge Not a Measure of a Good Figure

The Belly Button Challenge that kicked off in China and quickly spread around the world is a not really a measure of a good figure. No scientific study proves this.

According to Medical Daily, there is no scientific evidence that asserts that being able to reach one's belly button from behind means you're fit and healthy. In contrast, the challenge was regarded as destructive to the self-esteem of young girls and women because it tends to glorify excessively - skinny bodies and obliquely promote anorexia or bulimia.

The "Belly Button Challenge," essentially involves trying to touch one's belly button by reaching behind the back around the waist. It you achieve this, this means you have a good figure.

The challenge started on Weibo, a social website in China that immediately became popular among women. The trending topic translated "reaching your belly button from behind to show your good figure" was mentioned on Weibo over 130 million times, according to the BBC. Many people began uploading images of themselves doing the challenge. It also generated hundreds of thousands of discussion both online and offline specially focused on concerns on promoting an unhealthy body image.

Some health experts believed that the belly button trend is inclined on confounding society's standards of beauty as it obliquely says that being skinny is beautiful. Apparently the only way for you to successfully perform the challenge is for you to have at least a 24-inch waistline and be incredibly flexible.

The photo uploaded by a chubby male Weibo user named Sough Sa showing his successful completion of the challenge was believed to be faked. He was accordingly aided by his friend hiding behind him or the image was photoshopped. Either way, he sure made some people happy, which was completely summed up by one Weibo user Tang Zhao who posted, "Now you did it! So don't lose weight and please stay the same."
