Apple ‘El Capitan’ OS Preview: Early Version is Slick & Fast

Software developers were able to get a peek of the Apple's new operating system called "El Capitan" after the company featured it during the Worldwide Developers Conference 2015 (WWDC). A report from Yahoo says that Apple's OS X version 10.11 was named after a mountain near Yosemite.

This is a departure from the usual way of naming Apple OS X releases, which were named after jungle cats. The report said that the "El Capitan" OS was a more refined version of Apple's previous operating system, the OS X Yosemite. According to the same report, Apple claims that "El Capitan" has surpassed the OS requirements when it comes to speed and stability. The "El Capitan" can reportedly run applications with greater speed especially when browsing or editing pictures using Photos, a replacement of Apple's native photo application iPhoto.

The new browser can switch programs smoothly and can open PDF documents four times faster than the usual speed. When it comes to animation, "El Capitan" gives users an option to switch between virtual monitors in full screen mode, which, according to software developers, are "smoother and faster."

iDownloadblogs enumerated the following tweaks made by Apple in its new operating system, namely:

- New system font
- Flights data detector
- New color picker
- Find My Friends widget
- Photos editing extensions
- New Dictionary languages
- Last search
- Arabic and Hebrew dictation
- Keyboard shortcut for Chinese to English
- Safari top hit in Spotlight
- Resizable Spotlight window
- Suggested contacts
- Mute a tab
- Redesigned crayon picker
- Rename from context menu
- Chinese multiple-character input
- Time to leave
- Redesigned Disk Utility
- Improved Pinyin predictions
- Improved AutoFill
- Shared Links extensions

A similar report from Yahoo identified the tweaks that were not revealed by Apple. For instance, its native web browser Safari has a new "translucent" status bar, which disappears when a user is not pointing to an active link.

Keyboard shortcuts have been optimized for tabs, which allow users to use keystrokes and switch from Command-1 through Command-9. In "El Capitan," there is a new auto-hide menu bar which can actually work even if a user is not using a full-screen mode. Apple also introduces Disk Utility in the "El Capitan" OS as it automatically fixes errors after an installation of a program.
