Joyc Mitchell, the love-struck woman who played accomplice to the escape of two prisoners from a New York State prison, allegedly confessed that their plan included killing her own husband and head to a cabin in Vermont, news.com.au reports.
Joyce, or "Tillie", confessed of the horrendous plot during two 10-hour interrogations by State Police Investigators, a source from the law enforcement told the Albany Times-Union. But as previously reported, the state prison's tailoring supervisor had a change of heart at the last minute and did not show up with a getaway car when convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped the maximum-security prison through the manhole outside the facility.
According to Andrew Wylie, Clinton County's District Attorney, Mitchell was eaten up by her guilt and realized that she still loved her hubby, Lyle.
"Basically, when it was go-time and it was the actual day of the event, I do think she got cold feet and realised, ‘What am I doing?' " Wylie said.
"Reality struck. She realised that, really, the grass wasn't greener on the other side."
Lyle Mitchell, who worked as maintenance staff there, broke down in tears when he arrived work last week only to be asked to go home because he and his wife are being investigated in the escape.
A source told The New York Post that she is suspected to have had sexual affairs with both Matt and Sweat at the prison facility. She first got involved with Sweat whom she supervised in the sewing shop at the facility, NYPost.com reports. But after an inmate tipped off authorities of their relationship, Sweat got transferred out of the shop.
That's when Mitchell, 51 years old, landed in the arms of Richard Matt. The two got hot and heavy behind bars and she fell in love with him. Matt used this to persuade her to smuggle in the tools they will use for the break out.
A manhunt still continues as the two remain at large. Marshals and state troopers are door-to-door searching homes and making sure that no residents are being held hostage.
