RNB Queen Beyonce Knowles, also known as Queen Bey, is sued by a background singer named Ahmad Lane for $7 million for allegedly stealing his music and using it for her hit song 'XO.'
Radar Online reported that Ahmad Lane filed a federal lawsuit last year against the 33-year-old RNB star, together with her music company Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records, claiming she had stolen the music for the track.
Lane claimed that Queen Bey's current background singer, Chrissy Collins, handed her a copy of his song, 'XOXO,' after he passed on the track to her when the pair were working together for another artist.
The court documents obtained by Radar Online states that "Lane claimed that Knowles' song copies the first four bars of an eight-bar melody that is looped throughout his song, at 2:54, he quoted that his song contains a four-note sequence that is also similar to the superstar's song at 3:54, the title of Lane's song was 'XO' which is similar to the first two letters of Knowles' song entitled 'XOXO' and Lane appealed that his 'XO' contains images that are comparable to the artwork for 'XOXO'."
The defendants' response reads: "The two works at issue are entirely different songs that share no lyrical or musical similarity, other than perhaps the letters X and O. The two songs are distinct from a thematic perspective and it was also stated that Lane never filed for a copyright registration for his song."
However, the Grammy Award winner denied the claims and told the court that she has no need to steal since she has "17 Grammy awards and 118 million records sold." Knowles is now asking for the court's dismissal of the $7 million lawsuit and for the court to award nothing to the said background singer, Radar Online reported.
