E3 2015 News Announcements: 'Battlezone' Reboot Revealed

The original arcade game "Battlezone" released by Atari in 1980 will have a reboot, as UK-based game developer Rebellion announced the new development during the E3 event in Los Angeles this week. A report from Gamewatcher said that the new "Battlezone" game will be using a VR technology and will be available for both PC and PS4 gaming platforms.

Jason Kingsley, Rebellion CEO, was quoted as saying in the report, "When the original 'Battlezone' came out in 1980 - long before we were developing games - Chris and I were among the many who made up its loyal arcade following."

He added, "When we acquired the 'Battlezone' rights two years ago we almost had to pinch ourselves! It really was a dream come true, so it's our aim to deliver the same revolutionary thrill of the original for a whole new generation. We want to use VR to truly capture the imagination of today's gamers, just as the original 'Battlezone' captured ours," said Kingsley.

In a similar report, PC Gamer said the "Battlezone" reboot will be using an Asura Engine, the same technology that was used in the Sniper Elite 3 and is currently being developed for the VR platforms. Rebellion has also confirmed that "Battlezone" will be released for Steam but emphasized that PS4's Project Morpheus will only be available for VR platforms. The company said that other VR platforms are still being assessed while the non-VR versions are still being looked into.

With the "Battlezone" reboot, avid fans of the arcade game will experience another adventure again while seating in the driver's seat of a tank. Rebellion did not announce any release date yet, but what is certain this time is the reboot will have improved gaming features. The Tron-inspired battle tank will reportedly be more fun and enjoyable in the VR platforms.
