Charlize Theron, Sean Penn Break Up: Who Broke Off the Engagement?

The news of the split between Sean Penn and Charlize Theron after a year and half of being a couple hit the Internet like wildfire. According to a report from usmagazine.com, the two split after they were seen in the Cannes Film Festival, and Theron was the one who broke off the engagement.

According to reports, the two have been living separately, with Theron and son in their Hollywood home while Penn stayed put in his Malibu abode. There was even a scheduled event they had backed out from, but their representatives have not made a statement regarding their supposed split.

This split is surprising, as just last month, Theron, in an interview with UK Elle, said that Penn is the love of her life. "Putting aside that he's my partner, he's the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life and that made it hard."

According to anonymous sources, the two got romantic after being friends for decades, and a year after their relationship, the two got engaged during one of their trips to Paris, France. The source said that there was no elaborate proposal, adding, "There's no ring, but they are committed."

In one interview with Esquire UK, quoted in a previous usmagazine.com report, Penn said he was surprised to be in love with the South African beauty. He said, "I'm self-proclaimed bad at mathematics but I can do two plus two. 53 years old plus finally beginning to figure out why you haven't been happy in a single relationship? It could seem too late. But to run into somebody now who you care about is a much more passionate, deeper, truer and - God!- a much happier feeling. It's a lot more romantic and a lot more fulfilling to be in a relationship and to think you're a good person within it."

Both Penn and Theron have yet to issue an official statement regarding the news.
