'Magic The Gathering' Tournament's New Format Gains Popularity

Magic the Gathering will be having their grand prix in Singapore this coming weekend. IGN said that the phenomenal card game will stage its tournament in the Merlion country after the successful tournament in Chiba last May. The newest Magic tournament will also feature a new format, the same as what they had in the Chiba Tournament. These are the Basics, Standard, and Modern.

According to Magic , the tournament will feature 4 different formats, the Block or Basic, Standard, Modern, and Commander. The Block is basically something to do with each blocks of expansion will have its own constructed format which only allow cards that has been released in that block's expansion. In addition, each deck must have at least sixty cards. The Standard on the other hand is the most played format of the tournament. It only features the cards that were released in the most recent years. Players are allowed at least sixty cards and a sideboard of no more than fifteen cards.

Meanwhile, modern are cards from the Core Set Eight Edition and Mirrodin expansions, which is up to this day are legal. Just like Block and Standard, players are allowed to have at least sixty cards and may have a sideboard of up to fifteen cards. Lastly, the Commander allows each player to choose a legendary creature to be their commander and makes ninety-nine card decks around that creature.

Magic's Community Manager for their Asia Pacific Region (APAC) said that the format is interesting and appealing to the more experienced player because it lets the player use cards they loved, but are not legal anymore to use in Standard tournament formats. Jim Jen is referring to the Modern format.

The Commander on the other hand is also gaining popularity since World of Warcraft's card game came into the picture.

Magic The Gathering card game was first published in 1993 and has been the leading card game since its release.
