'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 Spoilers, Cast & Air Date: Ian Somerhalder's Damon Salvatore To Turn Off His Humanity Switch

"The Vampire Diaries" is set to return to CW in just a few months and fans are already speculating on the future of Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). After Nina Dobrev exited from the series, fans couldn't help but worry whether or not the show will continue to receive good ratings. With this, they have also become curious as to whether or not Damon will decide to turn off his humanity switch.

In a previous interview with TV Guide, Somerhalder hinted that his character could revert back to his old ruthless self now that Elena Gilbert is no longer around to inspire him.

"I'm excited to tell these f*cked up, dark, sexy, volatile stories. Now we get to go back to really great storytelling that was that was the season 1 and 2 of the show that we all loved. I want that Damon back," he said.

With his recent statements, fans are resigned to seeing Damon as the cruel vampire who could just kill off innocent people on the show. However, they also understand that the character has to deal with his recent loss.

Meanwhile, according to International Business Times, there's a possibility that Damon will be saved by Bonnie in Season 7. Despite Damon returning to his old cruel self, Bonnie will reportedly do everything in her power to save Damon for Elena. This has led fans to speculate that the two may eventually develop feelings for one another.

While speaking to TV Line, executive producer Caroline Dries revealed that Bonnie will be Damon's voice of reason.

"Everything he did, every choice he made, was somehow tied to Elena. Now that she's not there looking over her shoulder every five minutes, he has to figure out who he is without her and what choices he's okay making. He's going to have a rough go at it, and he's going to be dark and be Bad-Damon. But he's still got Bonnie there to remind him what Elena would do," she said.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 will premiere on the CW in the fall.
