"X-Men: Apocalypse" is the highly anticipated follow-up to "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and according to the film's director Bryan Singer, this latest installment will feature X-Men favorites, as well as introduce the rebirth of younger, new characters.
Director Bryan Singer recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his latest mutant movie project "X-Men: Apocalypse." During the interview, Singer revealed that the movie is "kind of a conclusion of six X-Men films, yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters." The latest X-Men film will feature teen incarnations of some of the Marvel comic's famous characters such as Storm to be played by Alexandra Shipp, Cyclops to be played by Tye Sheridan, Jean Grey by Sophie Turner, and Nightcrawler by Kodi Smit-McPhee. Meanwhile actor Oscar Isaac will play the titular role of the villain "Apocalypse".
Actor James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will reprise their role as the young Professor X and Magneto, respectively. Jennifer Lawrence will again don her shape changer persona Mystique. Also joining the cast is Olivia Munn who will play a new mutant character, the telepath Psylocke. Hugh Jackman is rumored to make a cameo as Wolverine.
According to Singer, the story of "X-Men: Apocalypse" is set during the year 1983 where the god-like villain Apocalypse had awakened from his slumber and is bent on destroying the world. This results to a conflict among the mutants, as they find themselves needing to choose which side to fight for. Singer also stated that the movie will show "the true birth of the X-Men." Singer said, "This is how it happens."
Aside from interviews, Singer has kept fans of the Marvel comics updated with his regular releases of "X-Men: Apocalypse" teasers, sneak peaks and concept arts. The director has also confirmed that the "younger, newer characters" are likely to remain the faces of the franchise going forward, reports Screen Rant. This presents a huge challenge for Singer, since the director would need to ensure a satisfying ending to the six X-Men films, as well as provide fans with a strong storyline and enough excitement to jumpstart another X-Men franchise.
This will be the fourth X-Men film that Bryan Singer will direct, having previously directed "X-Men", "X2: X-Men United" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past." "X-Men: Apocalypse" is slated to hit movie theaters on May 27, 2016.
