Tokyo Game Show 2015: Microsoft Skips Event; Xbox One Failing in Japan?

Microsoft has announced earlier this week that for the first time, it won't be attending the Tokyo Game Show 2015. The decision is speculated to be due to the poor performance of Microsoft's Xbox platforms, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, in Japan, a report from Tech Times said.

Tech Times categorically stated that Microsoft's Xbox One was not able to penetrate and capture the Japan market. The report said that despite Microsoft's efforts to gain some momentum in Japan, it could hardly inspire competition in Japan's gaming industry because its rivals, Nintendo and Sony, have actually dominated the Japan market.

Similar to E3 in Los Angeles, the Tokyo Game Show is reportedly the biggest gaming convention in Japan as it gathers various game developers to showcase their titles. However, as mentioned, this year, Microsoft will intentionally skip the show, for a change.

Masayuki Inoue of Microsoft Japan, via a press release as quoted in the Gamepur website, explained the decision of Microsoft to skip the Tokyo Game Show. He shared that Microsoft is currently busy with other preparations for next year's lineup.

"2015 will continue to provide an attractive game line-up, exclusive titles included. This year, Microsoft will not exhibit in the Tokyo Game Show, but we're making various preparations to deliver the latest Xbox news to fans and media. We will provide an update as soon as we can," said Inoue on the same website.

Meanwhile, Siliconera reported that Microsoft still has an ongoing collaboration and engagement with popular Japanese game developers for the company's Xbox One exclusive titles. For example, PlatinumGame's major title will be "Scalebound," which is being developed together with Microsoft including other video games such as "Mighty No. 9," which will reportedly be showcased by the company during the Gamescom event this year.

The Tokyo Game Show will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba on September 19 to 20.
