When you hire movers for your house move, you might not be sure how and how much you should tip them. But before you even think of that, you first need to know if you actually should.
Tipping is reserved for movers who do their job right. So if you weren't pleased with their output, don't feel compelled to do so.
However, movers who go out of their way to accommodate you deserve the extra pay and 'care'. About Home suggests these tips on how you can tip accordingly:
1. All the lifting, pushing, pulling, are sure to drain the energy out of your movers. So depending on the weather and time of day, it is always nice to offer a certain cold or hot beverage. Or, if the move takes longer than expected, provide food they could munch on while on the move such as pizza or sandwiches.
2. If you hired two movers, a tip of $60-$70 they could split between themselves should be nice. Of course, you have to base the amount on how hard the move was like if you had heavy boxes, if they had to go up and down the stairs, etc.
3. When tipping several movers, $30 each should be a modest tip. You can directly give the money to the head mover so they can all divide it equally when the job is done.
4. But, a tip that could go to as high as $100 is due for movers who provide absolutely amazing service and go beyond the call of duty such as helping with last minute packing and moving or taking care of fragile items. Or, even go look for your missing cat.
But how do you know when not to tip?
When thinking about tipping movers, there are three things you should keep in mind: they should be on time (unless they give you a valid reason), they should respect your things, and they should be organized. If they do anything that is opposite to any of these, that's a sign to just save that tip for next time.
