Detroit Foundation Provides Homes To Artists Through Contests

Detroit must be one of the states where there are tons of odd abandoned lots that are turned into something fruitful. For example, there are numerous empty lots that the city has turned into urban farms, an abandoned elementary school into a theater. In addition to these beautiful ideas, the program is also luring residents to come over to the Motor City with a $500 homes and $100,000 renovation grants, Realtor reported.

There was also a campaign where New York artists are convinced to move in. The campaign benefited a writer from the Big Apple to live in a house for two years and afterwards will own the property.

Write A House was the one responsible for the house grant which was founded by Sarah Cox, Toby Barlow, and Anna Clark in 2012. The organization was conceptualized out of the threes love for the city.

Other artists, such as painters and sculptors, were also relocated in the city's NoHam neighborhood. Most of the artists who been placed in the neighborhood were residents of Brooklyn.

But, despite the effort of Write A Home's effort to revive the city, there are still huge numbers of abandoned buildings and vacant lots just sitting in the city.

The house granted to the writer was a result of a contest that was held in 2014. The contest draws 350 applicants around the United States and was required to submit a portfolio of their work. The required work should have at least 2,500 word writing sample and a personal statement to help a stronger Detroit community.

Brooklyn Poet Casey Rocheteau emerges as the winner because of her witty but deeply serious poems.

On the other hand, while Detroit are looking for residents, New York, Vermont, and Canada are currently facing an issue that might cause some of their residents to leave the three locations, most specially those who are dwelling right beside the Lake Champlain. Based on the report by RealtyToday, the once serene and calm lake is now infested by blue - green algae. The infestation not only post threat to those living in and beside the lake but also the industry.
