Prince George of Cambridge Advance Birthday Gift: A Limited Edition Sterling Silver £5 Commemorative Coin

A limited edition sterling silver £5 Coin was created by the England's Royal Mint as a commemoration for the upcoming second birthday of Prince William and Kate Middleton's son, Prince George, next week on July 22.

According to the report released by the E! Online, the commemorative coin features an image of Christian martyr Saint George battling the mythical dragon. It was reimagined by artist Christopher Le Brun. The other side features the current portrait of George's great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, done by Jody Clark.

Director of Commemorative Coin and Bullion at the Royal Mint, Shane Bissett said that the St. George design was inspired by the name "George", which has long had links with the British monarchy and its coinage. It is said that there have been six kings of that name during the Royal Mint's 1,000 year history. She also added that the silver £5 coin was also selected because of its significance in the tradition of crossing the palm of a new born baby. The silver is a way to wish them wealth and good health throughout their life.

The Royal Mint has only created 7,500 pieces of the limited edition collectors' item and it was priced at £80 ($125), E! Online news added.

According to the news reported by the Daily Mail, the design has been approved by Prince George's proud parents, along with the Queen and Chancellor D'Exechequer George Osborne.

Meanwhile, Royal Mint has also revealed a special commemorative coin minted earlier this month to celebrate the christening of Prince George's little sister, Princess Charlotte. It was crafted by engraver John Bergdahl, who was also the creator of Prince George's commemorative christening coin in October 2013.

Daily Mail added that more than 2,000 commemorative silver pennies were given to babies born on the same day as the little princess. Also in 2013, the silver £5 coin released by The Royal Mint to commemorate Prince George's birth has become popular as its mintage of 10,000 coins sold out within days.
