San Francisco's Hunters View community may soon see a flurry a construction activity as developer Build Inc. is set to build several market-rate housing units in the area.
Around 2.5 acres in Hunters View was allotted for the massive project, wherein around 140 to 200 housing units will be constructed, reports Curbed. The developer behind the project Build Inc. is in negotiations with San Francisco officials to buy the expansive land. The lot is reportedly located on a steep hill and boasts of views of the bay.
The land is also situated in the notoriously crime-ridden area of the Hunters Point public housing community. According to BizJournals, the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development previously deemed the area as the worst in the country. Although the market rate housing project is part of the city's effort to revamp the area's community.
The BizJournals report further stated Build Inc. will shell out $10 million to develop the Hunters View land. Also, the construction of market rate housing units in Hunters View is the first initiative under the city's "Hope SF program." This multibillion-dollar program took decades to gain support and aims to revamp thousands of public housing units. The city will soon announce the second market rate property site that will be available for sale.
The "Hope SF program" also involved the demotion of older public housing. In replacement, around 800 new units were built, wherein some were already opened to residents, reports Curbed.
Meanwhile, the managing director of Build Inc., Lou Vasquez, said that the community is "pretty empty" now, reports BizJournals. Vasquez added, "It doesn't need to be a dangerous neighborhood. When you get people there at all levels of affordability, you'll create a community."
When completed the Hunters View Build Inc. project will reportedly hold three buildings to be designed by Mithun | Solomon.
