Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather is scheduled to fight Andre Berto on September 12 in Las Vegas. In a report, TMZ Sports said that the talks about the fight have been finalized. Both camps said that it is a done deal.
"It's a pleasure and honor to be in this position and I'm looking forward to capitalizing on every moment of it," said Berto. The report added that the two fighters are not just fighting for the sake of their careers but also because of a woman who is reportedly behind the bad blood between them.
According to International Business Times, the fight, which will be Mayweather's 49th, might be his last as it marks the end of his six-fight deal with Showtime. Floyd has reportedly been saying that he intends to retire at the end of his contract. The report added that the fight would also be televised on CBS, which will make the fight the most prominent boxing event on network television in decades.
The fight with Berto will also be Mayweather's second for this year after his controversial win against boxing icon Manny Pacquiao. Their May 2 fight generated an estimated 4.4 million buys in pay-per-view and made Mayweather the highest-earning celebrity with at least $220 million take.
The 38-year-old boxer is currently the WBA, WBC, lineal, and The Ring title holder. He also won the WBO welterweight belt during his fight with Pacquiao but it was recently stripped off him for failing to comply with the organization's rules. Mayweather refused to pay $200,000 sanctioning fee from the May 2 fight, reports ESPN.
"The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests," the WBO wrote in its resolution earlier this month.
Berto, on the other hand, has 33 wins and three losses in his entire boxing career.
