'Divergent' Movie 'Allegiant - Part 1' Plot Spoilers: Veronica Roth Teases Possible Alternate Ending; Will Tris Survive In The Movie?

"Divergent" series author Veronica Roth recently revealed that she previously thought of an alternate ending to "Allegiant" but said that it didn't do her story justice. According to Roth, killing off main book character Tris Prior was also a devastating decision on her part, but she knew it had to be done if she wanted the trilogy to be loved by readers.

Roth said that at first she thought of giving Tris the chance to survive and settle down after all the challenges she faced in "Allegiant." However, she knew that it wasn't the best thing to do because it didn't make much sense. With this, Roth stuck with her gut and decided to kill off Tris, according to Movie News Guide.

"Allegiant" star Theo James, who plays the role of Four, supported Roth's decision. In an interview with Buzz Feed, the actor said that Tris' death on "Allegiant" should be perceived as something philosophical because she will be sacrificing herself for mankind.

"I thought it was a natural - I thought it totally made sense. Her whole philosophy in life is selflessness and giving. She's almost like a semi-Christ figure in that way. She's endlessly selfless and it seems like an obvious, natural course for her to give her life for the sake of others," James told the publication.

In "Divergent," Tris survived death after she saw an epiphany of her mother. In "Insurgent," she once again survived death after she attempted to sacrifice herself. However, this will no longer be the case in the upcoming third installment of the movie. Tris, played by Shailene Woodley, will definitely be killed off.

Meanwhile, Roth previously confirmed that Woodley is aware that Tris will die in "Allegiant" and the actress is reportedly fine with it.

"Allegiant - Part 1" is slated to hit theaters in the United States in 2016.
