'Homeland' Season 5 Release Date & Spoilers: TV Series to Feature Hacktivism, New Characters

"Homeland" is moving to a new country for Season 5, and this time it will be set in Berlin, Germany. In the new season of the award-winning political thriller, Christian Today reports that the story is set two years after the Season 4 finale took place.

The show's co-creator Alex Gansa revealed that although the show will be set in a different location, the story still centers on different relevant issues that are making the headlines today. In this season, the co-creator revealed that it will tackle issues of online surveillance security, hacking, and personal and corporate privacy. He also explained that the issue that is going on in Berlin, Middle East, Ukraine and Russia is fascinating.

Master Herald reported that Gansa believes that Berlin is the appropriate location since this is where hacktivists are believed to be based, and the country's privacy laws are still stringent. He is exploring the issues of how authorities conduct surveillances of individuals living in the area. He added that although most of the scenes were shot in Germany, this does not mean that there will be no scenes in United States.

In Season 5, it is expected that the lead character, Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes, will cut her ties with the CIA and will start to work as the head of security for a German philanthropist. According to reports, the move to Germany is the result of her trying to reconcile with her guilt as she looks back to the years she was working against terrorism.

Earlier reports also revealed that the show will introduce four new characters which will become season regulars. These new cast members include Miranda Otto of "Lord of the Rings" and Sarah Sokolovic of "Cold Comes the Night." Other actors include Alexander Fehling of "Inglourious Bastards" and Sebastian Koch of "The Lives of Others."

Sokolovic and Fehling will be colleagues in the Düring Foundation, while Koch will play as Carrie's new German boss. Otto, on the other hand, will play as the chief of the station of Berlin who will be working under Saul Berenson, played by Mandy Patinkin.

"Homeland" Season 5 will start to air this fall.
