Following suit to many Republicans' orders of lowering the flags in their respective offices in honor of the five men who were killed by a gunman in Chattanooga, Tennessee, President Barack Obama has now also lowered the flag in the White House.
According to New York Times, the shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee left five men dead. Following the incident, many Republicans ordered their respective offices to lower the United States national flag to be half-staff in honor of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident. Those who were killed were residents of Massachusetts and Arkansas, two of the states that also followed suit in lowering the flags in their honor.
Last Tuesday, President Barack Obama also ordered the American flags inside the White House to do the same. Before that, several Republican already criticized him for not doing the deed earlier, following the incident.
According to Fox News, Obama issued a proclamation Tuesday afternoon addressing the Chattanooga victims stating: "We honor their service. We offer our gratitude to the police officers and first respondents who stopped the rampage and saved lives. We draw strength from yet another American community that has come together with an unmistakable message to those who would try and do us harm: We do not give in to fear. You cannot divide us. And you will not change our way of life."
After which, Press Secretary John Earnest told several journalists that Obama has offered his sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed in the attack.
Furthermore, the House also relayed their condolences through McConnell saying: "The U.S. Senate thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and with all those who protect us here, and around the world."
Truly, America has faced several threats to security for many, many years. This recent instance in Chattanooga, Tennessee has tremendously proved that the nation still stands united in honor for those men who sacrifice their lives for the benefit of the people. Do you think, though, that President Barrack Obama should have made the order sooner? Post your comments below.
