After the success of "Jurassic World," Universal Pictures finally announced that the box office hit will have a sequel. According to Deadline, "Jurassic World 2" will be released on June 22, 2018. Returning for the sequel are Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as the movie's lead characters. Pratt and Howard will reprise their roles as Velociraptor trainer Owen and operations manager Claire, respectively.
In addition to the returning lead stars, it was also reported that Colin Trevorrow will be back to write the script; however, he may not return as the director since he will be doing one of the "Star Wars" films, specifically "Star Wars Episode IX." Executive producers Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg were also reported to back the movie up.
With the huge success of "Jurassic World," it came as no surprise that the studio aggressively wanted to make a sequel that is based on the bestselling novel of Michael Crichton, as compared to the 14 years it took to make the fourth movie in the franchise. According to reports, the 14-year delay was the result of the tensions between Universal Studio executives and producer Spielberg after DreamWorks almost got a distribution deal with Universal.
According to the Wall Street Journal Blog, "Jurassic World" grossed an estimated $614.3 million in the United States and $1.522 billion worldwide. With these numbers, "Jurassic World" is now the third-highest grossing film of all time, surpassing Marvel's "The Avengers." The film is now next to "Avatar," which is the highest-grossing film of all time, and "Titanic," which is on the number 2 spot.
Universal Pictures has been having a great year with the successes of its films like "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Furious 7," and "Pitch Perfect 2." The company's earnings might reportedly still increase as "Jurassic World" is still set to premiere in Japan on August 5.
