The latest "Sharknado" movie may have the lowest ratings yet, but it was a guaranteed hit in the Twitter community. According to Variety, "Sharknado 3" may have featured more sharks and more celebrity cameos, but the Syfy low-budget movie did not gain more viewers this year.
According to Nielsen, "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No" only had an average of 0.9 rating in adults aged 18 to 49 and 2.81 million viewers during its 9 p.m. premiere on Wednesday. This was lower compared to last year's "Sharknado 2: The Second One," which had a rating of 1.3 in adults aged 18 to 49 and a total of 3.87 million viewers.
The very first "Sharknado" film back in July 2013 also drew a modest rating of 0.4 and only 1.37 million viewers during its premiere. However, social media seemed to help turn things up as the replays had a fairer number of viewers and ratings.
Despite the low numbers, Syfy still considers this as a big improvement on average. Not only that, it was reported that "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No" topped the Twitter charts on Wednesday compared to other television programs. The popular franchise had over two billion Twitter impressions which is a new record for the franchise, as "Sharknado 2: The Second One" only got one billion Twitter impressions, according to Observer.
This reportedly shows that "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No" generated more activity compared to the episodes of "Mad Men," every episode of "The Bachelor," and even Hillary Clinton's presidential announcement. Movie clips in Syfy's YouTube channel already has 4.1 million views and a different "Sharknado 3" video in YouTube has already garnered over 6 million views.
According to The Hollywood Gossip, even celebrities like Tyra Banks, Kevin Jonas and Alyson Hannigan tweeted about the movie. The network also announced at the end of last night's premiere that "Sharknado 4" is now in the works.
