Good Sleep Boosts Memory, Improve Mental Health, Studies Reveal

Who would have thought that sleep can enhance memory and improve mental health? Sleep doubles the chances of remembering things such as previously forgotten information and stored memory that's been buried over time as newly founded by the scientist. They then stated that sleep sharpens a person's power to recall and makes memories more accessible.

They did have a study regarding this matter participated by 123 individuals who underwent an immediate test and a 12-hour retest as stated by The DailyMail. The participants were then divided into two - half were given adequate amount of sleep while the other half were deprived of it. The studies then show that those participants that were able to get a good snooze were able to retain the information that was asked of them to remember, those deprived of sleep however wasn't able to retain most information.

As per Dr. Nicholas Dumay, a Psychologist of the University of Exeter stated that:

"Sleep almost doubles our chances of remembering previously unrecalled material." He then added that "The post-sleep boost in memory accessibility may indicate that some memories are sharpened overnight. This supports the notion that, while asleep, we actively rehearse information flagged as important." And "More research is needed into the functional significance of this rehearsal and whether, for instance, it allows memories to be accessible in a wider range of contexts, hence making them more useful."

Though much research is still needed, they did find out however that sleep does help retrieve uncalled memories that may prevent memory loss compared to daytime wakefulness. In contrast to the previous research that argues over the fact that sleep "only" protects an individual against having memory loss" as per TelegraphCo.

In addition to what he said, Dr. Dumay stated that:

"Sleep improves the accessibility of memories more than it protects them against interference." Further adding "In two studies in which net recall/recognition showed forgetting after 12 hours of wake, analyses revealed post sleep advantage was predominantly due to sleep promoting access to memory traces that had initially been too weak to be retrieved."
