Windows 10 Automatic Updates: Giving Headache to Some Windows Users

Windows Update is Microsoft's service for sending security patches, bug fixes, and new features to Windows users over the internet. Up until now, Windows users have had the option to disable automatic updates. Older versions give PC owners an option when to apply updates. But with Windows 10, it looks like Microsoft won't make it easy to disable updates.

According to Forbes, the latest pre-released build of the Windows 10 update will be mandatory and will be installed automatically. This was confirmed by Microsoft last week. The automatic updates are already causing headaches for many.

This can potentially lead to problems, say for example, a bad graphics driver. The issue right now involves Nvidia's graphics drivers which Windows Update automatically installs. This is causing multi-monitor setups and SLI (dual card) configurations to break; it can even stop the PC's booting entirely which pushes Windows 10 into its emergency recovery mode.

One user has complained in the Nvidia forum poster slycoder, "Please pull these off Windows update!!!" Another added, "It makes my second monitor not work and lots of flickering! Please. I roll back and Windows Update reinstalls them," as reported by Forbes.

"I second this... For multi screen users, that driver is flat out broken and it is beyond annoying that windows auto updates to it," another user stated.

According to a report by How to Geek.com, Microsoft says that Windows 10 will be "always up-to-date." Thus, there is not much of an option to disable automatic updates for Windows 10. Microsoft has also claimed that its feature updates will be tested on consumer devices before they are rolled out to business PCs.

This is generally a good thing, since it will help keep the computer secured even if the updates were not checked on a regular basis. However, there will be some instances that Microsoft will push an update that could cause issues.
