Nintendo's Wii U has surpassed the 10-million unit sales, as announced by the company's in its report last Wednesday.
Nintendo reached another milestone with more than 10 million units sold of their Wii U console. Last Wednesday, Nintendo released an online company sales report that included the console's good news. According to CNET, Nintendo sold its 10 millionth Wii U during the first fiscal quarter which ended in June 30. The company accomplished the feat nearly three years after the Wii U was first released. Also, game sales for the flagship console increased from 4.4 million units to 4.6 million units, as compared against the previous year's quarterly reports.
Adding to the company's success, Nintendo's new console "Splatoon" also marked a good start, stated Polygon, with a total of 1.62 million sold flagship units. It was released in May 28 this year with game titles specifically created to "contributed to vitalizing the Wii U platform." The company reports also stated that Nintendo's 3DS consoles - both the regular and XL-sized versions of Nintendo 3DS, the New Nintendo 3DS and 2DS - accumulated a total of 1.01 million units sold worldwide.
Although Nintendo recently celebrated its Wii U 10 million unit mark, Engadget stated that the company is not making enough earnings as initially expected. Based from the released report, only 470,000 Wii U units were sold worldwide during the three-month period. Compared with last year's platform performance, the console was down by 40,000 units from the 510,000 flagship console units sold during the same quarter in 2014. The initial profit estimate was approximately at $400 million for 2015, however, the company has not managed to surpass three percent of the desired sales.
Despite the slow and low sales, Nintendo is hoping profit margins will start to climb up, given the upcoming holiday season releases of "Super Mario Maker," "Star Fox," and "Mario Tennis."
