The Russian National Basketball Federation (RBF) has been known to be one of the best teams in the world, and the latest news regarding their teams' suspension can potentially lessen their chances to play in the next World Olympics, according to breathecast.com.
The same article also featured a letter from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) mentioned the decision for the Russian team as "being unable to resolve longstanding institutional and legal issues", thus leading to FIBA's suspension of the RBF. Sergei Chernov, Honorary President of the RBF, acknowledged receipt of the letter and also stated that this was the final verdict on the RBF's participation during the FIBA conference to happen on Aug. 8-9 this year.
An article featured in sg.sports.yahoo.com reported that the cause of the ban was due to the disagreement that happened between new President Yulia Anekeyeva (elected 2013) and the former RBF head. A regional court ordered the association to hold new elections for president as well as its executive board within 2 months and this was not followed through by the RBF.
FIBA President Horatio Muratore expressed their disappointment of the failure of the RBF to resolve their differences, prompting the suspension order. There are still chances to lift the said ban as Muratore invited RBF head Anekeyeva to the FIBA conference this August, as stated in the same report.
Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee, additionally stated in an article by rn.ibth.com that FIBA representatives will be present during the election for the RBF Executive Committee and President.
The Russian Basketball Federation men's national team are already making preparations for the upcoming September 2015 European Basketball Championships. The winning teams will have the chance to participate during next year's Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Brazil. London hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics where the Russian team placed bronze, according to the same article.
