2016 Rio Olympics: Venue Contaminated

The 2016 Summer Olympics or officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad is duly anticipated by its host city, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Preparations are being tightly observed as the city would be hosting sporting events spread across the city's 4 regions, Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã.

However, still far away from the Olympic Games' opening ceremony, a major controversy has already swum its way to the limelight. For an analysis of the water quality, whose samples were taken from regions and venues of the summer Olympic, revealed high levels of viruses and bacteria present in the hosting regions' waters.

Such findings alarmed and even dismayed some of the officials and competitors of the anticipated event. For there are estimated 10,000 athletes, coming from 205 nations, who are expected to compete in next year's Olympics. And from that said populations, almost 1,400 of them would be engaged into water sports. If the said issue will not be resolved and waters will not be treated, competitors like in swimming and boating would likely be immersing themselves in waters contaminated with human feces and other disease-causing materials. The risk of the players being sick and unable to take part in games would surely be a possibility. And such possibility is somehow being validated by competitors training in Rio who have been reported being already ill with fevers, vomiting and diarrhea.

A marine biologist at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, John Griffith examined the protocols, methodology and results of the test done with Rio's water, and he stated that;

"What you have there is basically raw sewage. It's all the water from the toilets and the showers and whatever people put down their sinks, all mixed up, and it's going out into the beach waters. Those kinds of things would be shut down immediately if found here [U.S]"

Such validation would somehow make the authorities hasten their official pledges of cleaning up the mess and stench. And in same manner encourage tourist and citizens alike to contribute in their own little ways.
