Roddy Piper, The Wrestling Villain, Dies at 61

For all those long time wrestling fanatics, the kilt-wearing wrestler would always be remembered.

Rowdy' Roddy Piper, who was known for his kilt outfit and cracking another wrestler, Jimmy Snuka, over the head with a coconut has passed away according to his agent. Report says that the 61 year old World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Famer, whose real name was Roderick George Toombs, died peacefully in his sleep last Friday at his California residence.

Rowdy, as he was called for being too noisy while he would enter the arena with his bag pipe and big mouth, was one of the many wrestlers who made wrestling a big event. His rivalry with Hulk Hogan made headlines and in a way promoted wrestling and WWE overseas. The statement of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, quoted from bbcnews, highlighted Piper's contribution to the industry as he said that;

"Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE,"


Piper's entertainment career was not solely enclosed within the confines of wrestling for he likewise gained praise after venturing out into acting. He had some moments in the film industry including the cult classic "They Live," which was directed by one of his friend, John Carpenter. On the same website, Carpenter was quoted saying;

"He was an under-rated actor and just a marvellous entertainer and I feel like I've just lost one of my close friends."

With this news eclipsing the controversy surrounding Hulk Hogan and WWE, fans of Roddy Piper and wrestling enthusiasts, poured out their condolences on the social media. WWE star John Cena twitted on his account saying that;

"My heart goes out to his family and the fans he entertained over the years. RIP Rowdy," he tweeted.

Keith David, a co-star from the movie "They Live," likewise posted on his account

".@R_Roddy_Piper was my friend and I will sorely miss him. I'm just in shock."


Piper may be already dead, but his legacy and the inspiration he left behind will be forever be remembered by his family, friends and fans.
