Moving in to a new place? That's exciting! But a good plan should be well drafted before the experience turns into your worst nightmare.
Here are some important points to remember when preparing to transfer to your new home. Preparation should not be done just a couple of weeks or days before that actual day when you will be moving in. Here's a checklist of the things that you need to attend to, definitely way ahead of time.
- 2 months before
- Research and investigate moving company options. If you do not want professional service on this, inform friends or relatives and ask for their help on the day that you intend to move
- Confirm the day and time that you will be moving
- If you are renting a place, inform your landlord as well of this plan
- Go to the different rooms in your house; sort and decide on which stuff to keep and discard the unnecessary items
- If you have children attending school, request for their transfer credentials
- 6 weeks before
- Inform relevant utility companies/ service providers/ subscriptions
- Take measurements and dimensions in your new home to make sure that the things you will be bringing along will fit in the doors
- Order furniture, supplies and materials like boxes, bubble wraps, tapes, which you will be needing for your transfer
- Start consuming perishables that you don't intend to take with you such as frozen food, cleaning materials
- One month before
- Start packing the things that you frequently use and make sure to label the most important and valuable things; assign the boxes to their designated rooms and note those that will need insurance by moving companies like the computer
- Do a change of address by informing your postman or do it online at usps.gov
- 2 weeks before
- De-register from your doctor, dentist and ask for referrals
- Ask someone to look after your children and pets during your move
- Ask for a day off or leave on that day
- Tune up your car and request your mechanic to consider the possible services needed for your new place
- Contact and reconfirm your schedule with the moving company
- 1 week before
- Pack up your suitcase
- Prepare medicines that you will need for the transfer
- A few days before
- Defrost the freezer (24 hours before the actual moving- in) and clean the refrigerator if you will be bringing it with you
- Prepare for the payment if you opted to get the services of a moving company
- Prepare food and drinks for the moving-in day itself
Of course, just as in any event in our life, some unexpected situations may still happen no matter how detailed the plan is. But, there is still nothing like having a framework on what to accomplish before that most awaited day.
