The 21st century adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock" series has attracted a vast audience from all over the world.
As BBC produces each three- episode seasons, fans are wanting for more as "Sherlock" Season 4 is bound to be filmed on 2016 and shown in 2017. To compensate for the fandom's withdrawal, "Sherlock" crew will release a special Victorian- era episode later this year.
Though it is widely speculated that the special episode will be aired as a Christmas special, "Sherlock" Executive Producer Steven Moffat made sure that information about the special episode will be disclosed as little as possible. "We are aiming for zero cognitive content in our answers today" the producer joked.
PBS's Masterpiece chief Rebecca Eaton said that PBC is waiting for BBC's decision on when to air the episode. She said that it's the only time they can decide when to air the episode for the U.S. audience. She also added "We are all working... to be as nimble as we can with this one... and we are in very close touch with BBC. I think we are working very hard on it to not frustrate the fans who know it's on BBC and want to see it." Moffat also said that the special will be shown in selected theaters around the world.
As to explain why they set the episode in Victorian era, Moffat simply said "we checked the books, and decided we got it wrong [and] because we can." He also further explained that their crew are not really bothered that they initially set the Sherlock in 21st century London, so why they would bother if they set the series back to its supposed era. Moffat said that Victorian- era gives a better setting for ghost stories. He then later cleared that the series will go back to its original era for the next season "unless I go mad and set it in the 1940's and have him fight Hitler."
