In an article from Interior Design, Mark Zeff shared how he did his first Black Barn, which is located in East Hamptons. The article added that he searches for an abandon house, buys a secluded plot of land a two-minute walk from the little beach, and builds from scratch. He said, "It was basically design a place around the things we had collected."
In addition, the article mentioned that he took an inspiration from the area's ever dwindling farm buildings. The article added that his first Black Barn is not quite modest because it serves as a front of a much larger, 6,200 square foot white-painted farmhouse-style structure.
